Journal Jottings: October 2005

April 20th, 2006

I have no single thing to write about today so I thought I’d share a miscellany of thoughts and ideas that caught my interest in September and which I wrote down in my journal.

Thursday, September 1st
Have just subscribed to a Henri Nouwen e-mail thought for the day. This morning he writes of our need to move beyond our wounded selves to claim our God-given selves. Good.

Friday, September 2nd
Something my wife, Jude, said today:

sometimes we must give up our past so others may have a future.

Sunday, September 4th
The Reverend Stephen Hambidge preaching at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Calgary:

love does not mean accepting the sin in people, but love does mean accepting people in their sin.

Friday, September 9th
Went to the Alpha barbeque at Medicine Hat College where I heard Nicky Gumble ask,

What meaning does my life have that the reality of death does not destroy?

What, indeed?

Monday, September 12th
One of my problems, as articulated by Henri Nouwen:

The great danger of the turmoil of the end-time in which we live is losing our souls. Losing our souls means losing touch with our center, our true call in life, our mission, our spiritual task. Losing our soul means becoming so distracted by and preoccupied with all that is happening around us that we end up fragmented, confused, and erratic.

What can I do about that, Lord? What is my true call in life, my mission, my spiritual task? I need to study and pray that.

Saturday, September 17th

Being afflicted can be part of God’s faithfulness—Psalm 119:75.

One of those verses I’ve not noticed before.

Thursday, September 22nd
Something about what it means to be Christian these days from Dag Hammarskjöld in Markings:

To exist for the future of others without being suffocated by their present.

Today, Saturday, October 1st
May God bless each one of you as you read this.
