Christmas 2005
In the twelfth month, God sent angels to Medicine Hat, a town in Alberta, to church-folk there—evangelicals, mainliners and charismatics. The angels said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
It wasn’t so much that the church-folk were troubled at these words, they just didn’t hear them. Their spiritual ears were no longer in tune with angel voices. They no longer expected or even believed that angels might speak to them.
But the angels said to them, “Do not be afraid, you have found favor with God. You will be with child spiritually this Christmas and you will give birth to a son in your lives and you are to remember that his name is Jesus. He is very great and is the Son of the Most High.”
“How will this be,” the people asked, “since we are Anglicans (or Baptists, or Presbyterians, or Catholics, or Pentecostals)?”
The angels answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. The holy one to be born in you will cause people you least expect to come to faith—some even in their old age. People who were thought to be spiritually barren will become pregnant with the life of Jesus. For nothing is impossible with God.”
“We are the Lord’s servants,” the church-folk answered. “May it be with us as you have said.” Then the angel left them.
As the Lord was with Mary, so He is with us. As the Holy Spirit came upon Mary, the Holy Spirit is upon us and the power of the Most High overshadows us. Mary co-operated with God to do an impossible thing. God can do things in and through us which are just as impossible.
Have an impossibly blessed Christmas!
